Easing European debt concerns lifted the markets to a modestly higher close with the Dow rising 19 points to 11,382. Nasdaq gained 12 points to 2591.

On the upside

Rising silver prices lifted shares of Hecla Mining (NYSE: HL).

Reports that Congress may legalize and tax some forms of Internet gambling lifted shares of Boyd Gaming (NYSE: BYD).

On the downside

Seeking Alpha contributor Miriam Metzinger wrote that investors should avoid teen retailer Pacific Sunwear (Nasdaq: PSUN).

Sirius XM Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI) announced the successful placement of its XM-5 satellite in orbit but the stock price fell.

A compressor tripped at Exxon Mobil's (NYSE: XOM) Baytown, Texas refinery sparking some flaring.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 5 to 3 on the NYSE and by nearly 5 to 3 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks gained 5 points to 756.
