Mixed Close As Senate Hashes Out Tax Cut Details

The markets closed mixed with the Dow rising 18 points to 11,428 as Senators continued negotiating details of the tax cut extension package. Nasdaq fell 12 points to 2624.

On the upside

RPC (NYSE: RES) commenced a 3-for-2 stock split.

Edwards Lifesciences (NYSE: EW) forecast strong double digit sales growth in 2011.

Israeli newspaper Calcalist reported that four investment funds have submitted acquisition offers to Ness Technologies (Nasdaq: NSTC).

On the downside

A weekend Barron's article said that American Superconductor (Nasdaq: AMSC) was overvalued.

Cloud Peak Energy (NYSE: CLD) announced a secondary public offering of 25.6 million common shares.

Shares of Sky-Mobi (Nasdaq: MOBI) continued falling after a disappointing initial public offering on Friday.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 10 to 9 on the NYSE while decliners edged out advancers by more than 7 to 5 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks lost 4 points to 772.
