A wildlife sanctuary in Tampa, Florida is the location of one of the most horrific animal attacks on record in the United States involving a volunteer who required more than 400 stitches to save her arm.

Big Cat Rescue’s CEO, Carole Lewis Baskin, would like to keep the fact that her facility in Tampa has had a number of attacks and escapes, conveniently omitted from the statistics she post on her website and a number of other sites, but her creditability is shattered by one of the most gruesome attacks ever reported.

Mindy Harrell of Odessa, Texas was attacked by a leopard when it reached through its cage, removing the skin from her elbow to her wrist. Harrell, 46, received 451 stitches to her right arm after she got to close to the animal’s cage.

Carole Lewis Baskin, CEO of the sanctuary, denied any wrongdoing in response to the Federal charges brought on by the United States Department of Agriculture, and claimed the inspector was biased against her.

Mrs. Lewis Baskin has posted on her current website, and many others she runs, the vital statistics of having big cats in captivity and the dangers of keeping them in zoos and parks around the world, but fails to include that she herself has had numerous escapes and attacks.

Seventy-year-old Peggy Rousanzion of Largo, Florida recalls her overnight stay at the sanctuary, presented as a birthday gift, and how she was able to experience the joy of having a large exotic cat stay overnight with her in a cabin on sanctuary property. She remembers having a 70-pound cat in her lap for hours without supervision from a Big Cat Rescue qualified staff member.

The sanctuary has made headlines many times with controversy. The largest being when the founder and millionaire Jack Don Lewis went missing and, to this day, whose body has yet to been found, leaving millions in the hands of Carole Lewis Baskin.
