Huntersville Dentist Discusses the Mouth/Body Health Connection

Dr. Herbert Mills has spent the bulk of his career helping patients focus on oral germ management for improved oral and overall health.

There are plenty of studies these days that have identified the connection between dental health and overall health.

More evidence shows that the mouth is a window into other areas of our body in terms of health. In 1981, Huntersville Dentist Dr. Herb Mills began to realize the importance of this mouth health/body health connection and he began to diligently focus his practice on the concept of oral systemic health.

“This will sound outlandish to some, but we actually can help patients live longer by teaching them how to keep their mouths healthier,” Mills says.

The dentist in Huntersville, NC focuses on antimicrobial oral germ management. That means the technology available for the treatment performed in his office, along with the patient’s oral hygiene at home lower oral germ levels below the infectious level.

“You can’t sterilize the mouth,” Mills says, “but all we need to do is to get the germ levels really low, and then our immune systems can handle what is there.”

Mills admits that most dentists don’t pay attention to this notion.

“But we do. I’m committed to that,” he says.

Why work to eliminate germs from the mouth? Most halitosis- bad breath- is caused directly by toxic bacteria. Mills can successfully treat and eliminate most halitosis with his oral germ management technology.

A more serious reason for eliminating germs is because if they stay long enough, germs can invade the body through the mouth, get into the blood stream and travel practically wherever they want to go. This can cause damage to internal organs and worsen diabetes, as well as lead to blood pressure problems and cardiovascular disease.

“These are all proven problems coming out of the fact that oral bacteria are in the blood stream,” says Mills, who offers non-surgical gum disease treatment at his Huntersville dentistry practice. “We really can’t tolerate gum bleeding anymore, because that is a clear indicator that there is bacteria in there.”

Mills combats the bacteria through specialized systems of care in the office and at home that can control bacteria “in a way we never could before,” he says.

When bacteria are removed from a patient’s mouth, it also cleans up the blood stream and the organs, encourages health and wellness and promotes a stronger immune system.

“Our patients get healthy,” Mills says. “The patients have to be ready to take charge of their health, but it’s exciting when they do and we’re able to improve their lives.”
