Snow Day, How Much Do Companies Pay?

When unexpected weather hits, lost productivity means lost dollars within a company.

How much does it cost your business to shut down during a blizzard? When the US Congress shut down last February for three and half days according to John Berry, director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), it cost US taxpayers $350M in lost productivity.

As everyone in Midwest is digging themselves out of the biggest snow storm in last 60 years, many Chicago area businesses were unexpectedly shut down yesterday and today.

Mayor Daley Stopped short of telling Chicago businesses to close down on Wednesday, he said, "I'm not going tell people to shut down because of the weather, but be prepared".

Thanks to new technologies such as IP-based phone systems, not all area businesses are as concerned about lost productivity. Employees can log-in from their home networks and make and receive calls through their company phone system without missing an a call. Mobile workers and teleworkers can also continue to work as if they were in the office. This ensures business continuity and productivity even during adverse weather conditions, pandemics, traffic or other circumstances that can prevent timely and ongoing access to physical offices. These enabling mobile technologies also deliver the benefit of businesses being able to attract the best talent regardless of their physical location.

Steve Melchiorre, President of Converged Communications Systems based in Evanston, has been providing mobility and business continuity solutions to businesses since 2003. "Our employees not only help other businesses, but we gain tremendous productivity by leveraging technologies like VoIP, unified messaging, mobility solutions." This storm serves as a reminder that even the best laid plans can be changed by mother nature, but now we have ways to continue to work in the comforts of our own homes.
