Higher Close On Upbeat Earnings

Upbeat earnings lifted the markets to a higher close with the Dow gaining 45 points 12,684. Nasdaq rose 15 points to 2843.

On the upside

Rosetta Resources (Nasdaq: ROSE) reported higher first quarter earnings as revenue soared.

Bargain hunters lifted shares of Weight Watchers (NYSE: WTW), whose shares dropped on Friday despite reporting sharply higher first quarter earnings that easily topped analyst estimates.

The U. S. Army awarded a $63.4 million contract to Arotech (Nasdaq: ARTX) to design and develop 28 Virtual Clearance Training Suites.

On the downside

Shares of Renren (NYSE: RENN) continued falling as investors locked in profits on the Chinese social networking site.

Gramercy Capital (NYSE: GKK) announced that $790 million in mortgage and mezzanine loans matured without repayment by borrowers.

Headwaters (NYSE: HW) disappointed by widening second quarter losses as expenses climbed.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 5 to 2 on the NYSE and by nearly 2 to 1 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks climbed 9 to 842.
