Hitachi Data Systems Customers Named as Laureates in the 23rd Annual IDG Computerworld Honors Program

Hitachi Data Systems Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT), today announced that customers Epworth HealthCare, Qualcomm and University of Utah Health Care have been named 2011 Computerworld Honors Laureate award winners under the Business Responsiveness category by the IDG Computerworld Honors Program. The 23rd annual awards program honors visionary applications of information technology promoting positive social, economic and educational change. The Computerworld Honors awards were presented at the annual Laureates Medal ceremony and Gala Awards on Monday, June 20, 2011, at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C.

Epworth HealthCare

Epworth HealthCare is a private, not-for-profit hospital located in Victoria, Australia. It provides acute medical and surgical services, care, diagnostics and rehabilitation to more than 100,000 in-patients annually, and is a leader in maternity, oncology, cardiology, robotic surgery, acquired brain injury, rehabilitation and orthopedic services.

After an expansion of its clinical facilities last year, Epworth realized it needed additional storage capacity to better handle the additional growth and regulations regarding storing patient data. The hospital also wanted to leverage this added capacity to host key data-intensive clinical applications such as patient management solutions and to improve replication capabilities between its two storage area networks (SANs) to more cost-effectively manage data, provide comprehensive disaster recovery, and deliver a higher return on assets (ROA).

Since expanding its storage environment with HDS, Epworth not only has better disaster recovery capabilities, but also a storage environment that is better suited to support the hospital’s clinical information systems, enabling doctors to more easily analyze patient records to make better diagnoses and management decisions.

Qualcomm Incorporated

A world leader in next generation mobile technologies, Qualcomm needed to free up floor space in its U.S.-based data centers, better manage data growth, and keep consistent levels of performance while not adding IT headcount. Qualcomm realized it needed to evolve its storage infrastructure to accomplish these goals. By partnering with HDS and implementing a tiered storage environment with controller-based virtualization, thin provisioning and remote storage management services based on the Hitachi Universal Storage Platform® V storage system, Qualcomm implemented a sustainable approach to growing its business without requiring an increase in internal staff. Additionally, with HDS solutions, Qualcomm increased the performance and availability of the company’s critical applications, helping to better serve the digital needs of customers around the world, including connecting people to information, entertainment and to one another.

University of Utah Health Care

University of Utah Health Care (UUHC) provides care for residents of Utah and residents of five surrounding states in a referral area encompassing more than 10 percent of the continental United States. The facility offers routine care and highly specialized treatments requiring the latest technology and advancements, including some services available nowhere else in the region.

To continue offering leading-edge care, UUHC planned to complete the institution-wide implementation of a number of new systems supporting health plans as well as scheduling, registration, and billing. These new systems also needed to integrate with the EpicCare Electronic Medical Record system. To accomplish this, UUHC needed a scalable and reliable storage architecture to handle a growing volume of electronically stored streams of information and data. The health system updated its storage architecture by implementing Hitachi storage virtualization solutions including Hitachi Universal Storage Platform V, Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning, and Hitachi Tiered Storage Manager.
