Markets Advance As Fed Maintains Low Rates

The Federal Reserve will maintain record low interest rates saying that economic growth was slower than expected. The markets advanced into positive territory during the midday with the Dow edging up 4 points to 12,194 while Nasdaq added 3 points to 2690.

On the upside

AeroVironment (Nasdaq: AVAV) reported higher fourth quarter earnings that beat analyst expectations.

A Seeking Alpha contributor wrote that ReneSola (NYSE: SOL) was extremely undervalued.

Collins Stewart upgraded Hanwha SolarOne (Nasdaq: HSOL) to a Buy rating.

On the downside

La-Z-Boy (NYSE: LZB) disappointed with lower fourth quarter earnings as expenses rose.

ECOtality (Nasdaq: ECTY) priced its secondary offering of 8.5 million common shares at $2.50 per share.

A New Mexico Public Regulation Commission recommended a two phase rate increase of $85 million for PNM Resources (NYSE: PNM), rejecting an additions rider of $20 million.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 5 to 3 on the NYSE and by nearly 10 to 9 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks added 2 points to 809.
