No Deficit Reduction Plan, Markets Close Mixed

The markets closed mixed with the Dow falling 43 points to 12,681 after Congressional leaders failed to reach a compromise on a deficit reduction plan. Nasdaq climbed 24 points to 2858.

On the upside

LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK) will hold its annual shareholders meeting on Thursday September 8, 2011 at the company's office in Hong Kong.

Second quarter earnings surged for Complete Production Services (NYSE: CPX) to beat analyst expectations as revenue soared.

NCR (NYSE: NCR) reported sharply higher second quarter earnings that topped analyst estimates as revenue rose.

On the downside

Analysts expect Supervalu (NYSE: SVU) to post lower first quarter earnings next week.

Reynolds American (NYSE: RAI) blamed legal charges for lower second quarter earnings.

Second quarter earnings for Edwards Lifesciences (NYSE: EW) missed analyst expectations.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 10 to 9 on the NYSE while decliners edged out advancers by nearly 10 to 9 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks edged up a fraction to 841.
