DP&L and Lowe’s Help Reduce Energy Costs for Weekend Shoppers

When was the last time you got something for free and kept right on saving money? Over the next two weekends, shoppers visiting two Miami Valley Lowe’s stores can get a free compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) when they buy one, courtesy of Dayton Power & Light (DP&L).

You will continue to save money because each inefficient, incandescent bulb you replace with a CFL could save you up to another $30 over its lifetime. Did you know the average home has 40 light bulb sockets? That’s a lot of savings.

There are two chances to get your free CFL bulbs.

  • This weekend, October 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fairborn Lowe’s, 2850-I Centre Drive. Radio station WMMX-FM (107.7) will be broadcasting live from the store.
  • Next weekend, October 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Centerville Lowe’s, 6300 Wilmington Pike. Radio station WLQT-FM (94.5) will be broadcasting live from the store.

For each qualified CFL bulb you buy during each event, you will receive a free CFL bulb from DP&L (each shopper is limited to six free bulbs). DP&L representatives will also be on hand to discuss energy-saving tips and offer suggestions about how and where to use your new CFL bulbs. There will also be displays of a hand-cranked generator and a bike allowing visitors to generate enough energy to light up different types of bulbs.

If you can’t make it to Lowe’s either Saturday, you can still save money on a variety of discounted bulbs. DP&L is featuring two great deals on CFLs at Lowe’s, including a 6 pack of 13W (60 W equivalent) soft white, formerly $8.98, on sale for $1.18 or a six pack of 23W (100 W equivalent) soft white, formerly $12.48, on sale for $3.48.

DP&L’s energy saving programs, introduced in 2009, are saving electricity in the Miami Valley. Our initial calculations show that DP&L’s business and residential customers are saving enough energy to power 24,000 homes for a year. Since 2009, more than 4.5 million DP&L discounted compact fluorescent light bulbs have been sold at retailers like Walmart, Home Depot, and Sam’s Club. CFL Facts

  • One CFL equals about 9 incandescent bulbs, meaning less waste in landfills.
  • CFLs use 75% less energy and last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
  • Switching 5 of your most used light bulbs to CFLs could save you up to $50 per year on your electricity bill.
  • If every home in Ohio replaced just one light bulb with an energy-efficient CFL, we would save enough energy to light more than 156,000 homes for a year.
  • CFLs produce less heat, helping reduce cooling costs during warmer months.
