Learning How To Manage Your Debt Is Crucial To Paying It Off

Set up your budget and stick to it - no matter what

Being in debt can be extremely stressful, which is why everyone who is in debt wants out - as soon as possible. But the thing that most people forget is that while it took a while to get into debt, it will also take a while to get out of it. You can’t make debt go away overnight.

A crucial first step toward managing your debt and eventually making it go away is setting up a budget. You must first know where you money is going now before you can make sense of where it should be going tomorrow.

Many people turn to debt consolidation or debt negotiation when they find themselves in over their heads. The temptation to rob Peter to pay Paul is great. But you may find that it is better to pay off each debt one by one, instead of in a lump sum.

Debt consolidation can be a good step for some, however. You should consider consolidating your debt only if you have the discipline not to use your credit cards to create more debt. Consolidation means that you take out a loan to pay off existing debt.

Never use a home equity loan to pay off credit card debt, even if the rates for a home equity loan are lower than your card’s interest rate. And don’t borrow from your 401(k). The closer you move toward retirement, the more you will regret having done so.

Learning to manage your debt is just as important as learning to pay it off. Once you are out of debt, you must know how to stay that way. An obvious first step is to stick to the budget you have established.

You may wish to consider cutting up your credit cards, but if you choose to keep them, make sure you pay them in full each month to avoid paying interest. You may want to call your card issuers and request a lower interest rate in exchange for keeping the card active.

If you are so far in debt that you can’t pay anything, and you have debt collectors knocking at your door, make sure you know your rights. Debt collectors cannot harass, oppress or abuse you or any third party they contact. They may not imply that they are government representatives or that you have committed any sort of crime, and they may not tell you that you may face arrest if you do not pay your debt.

It is important to remember that paying off your debt will take time, and that if you stick to it, your reward will be living debt free.
