Undersea Fiber Optics Given Room for Maneuver

Underwater and undersea fiber optics are technologies based on constraint. Small wiring spaces and difficult working conditions led SEA CON® Worldwide company Precision Subsea AS from Norway to develop a new flexible connection hose.

Under sea and under pressure any Engineer or tech that operates electronic equipment undersea can tell you the problems of connecting wiring in tight bulkheads and restricted spaces.

SEA CON Worldwide® subsidiary Precision Subsea AS based in Norway.
Has launched the 8mm PBOF Hose & MKII Fitting System.

The hose fitting like all great inventions is simple - wiring for underwater fiber optic and electrical connectors can been stored together in one single clear hose.

The hose allows engineers and technicians to exploit the available bend radius in a wiring space to maximum effect. The clear polyurethane hose allows for easy identification of wiring and hose contents.

The 8mm hose follows on from the existing 13mm and 20mm hose sizes. The Hose is designated PBOF (Pressure Balanced, Oil Filled) it is pressure rated to the same standards as the 13mm and 20mm hose.

The 8mm connector is also fully compatible with the 13mm and 20mm hose types.

The hose is tested as pressure and temperature self regulating to 3,000m.

The operational temperature range of the hose is -5 to +40°C and can be kept in storage from -35 to +50°C.

The hose is designed for a working lifetime for up to 25 years. Fluid compatibility ranges from Silicone oil to mineral oil, synthetic oil & seawater.

materials used in the fitting are Titanium GR2 or AISI316 and the fitting Sealing system is Single or Double o-rings.

Key Features of the PBOF 8mm MKII Hose;

Temperature and pressure compensated
Design Life: >25 years in operation subsea
Pressure/Temperature: Self compensating to
3,000m WD
Single or double o-ring sealing
Metal to metal sealing
Swivel Nut. Serrated for easy handling
Titanium GR2 or AISI316 as an option
Anti-rotation crimp sleeve system
MKII compatible through out
Crimp sleeve electrically connected

The hose wall is 3mm thick and has been designed to provide increased resistance against kinks with a minimum bend radius of 45mm.

From the development process in August 2011 to February 2012 42 PBOF MKII hoses have entered service around the world.
