PR Log - Jan 22, 2013 - HOUSTON -- What is not as well known of this native New Orleanian is the story of her drive and determination to guarantee the success of her small business. Tammy grew up in a group home for girls after her mother was murdered across the street from her childhood home. In high school, she won a $10,000 Coca Cola Martin Luther King scholarship. She made her case to Vocational Rehabilitation Association that she was a handicap of the state of Louisiana due to the fact that she didn't have parents and wanted to go to college. That bit of genus landed Tammy another $2,500 a semester for college. This allowed her to attend the college of her choice. Tammy graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana with a bachelor in Accounting. It wasn’t until her senior year in college she wanted to become a cosmetologist. She enrolled in Molers Beauty College 3 months after graduating from Xavier. Thirteen months later, Tammy graduated from Molers and was ready to put the skills she had accumulated to work in the real world. She was also ready to leave New Orleans.
Tammy relocated to Houston in 1995. She started her life in Houston as a single mother on welfare. But for Tammy, failure was not an option. Getting a full time salaried job with benefits for her and her son would have been easy, but Tammy had other plans. She decided to forgo a salaried position and only took temporary assignments in accounting to pay for her true passion, booth renal to work in a hair salon. She would work a full day at the office so that she could do her real passion on evenings and weekends. Her hard work paid off. In 2000, just 5 years after arriving in Houston and 7 months pregnant, Tammy opened her very own hair salon. When asked how she did it, Tammy said she comes up with solutions, not excuses.
Tammy offers superior customized hair care service. She specializes in soft healthy natural hair care, virgin relaxers, keratin protein straightening treatments, short haircuts and hairstyles, hair coloring and hair braiding. She also specialize in dealing with over processed and under processed hair caused by improper application of relaxers and/or other chemical treatment. Tammy has been a successful hairstylist for 17 years because of the attention she gives to clients and their concerns about their hair. Tammy decided to continue to launch her new hair salon website despite the unexpected and sudden change in her location due to the City of Houston forcing her out. And although the City of Houston’s forcing of this single mother and small business owner out of her salon on Scott Street in Houston nearly devastated her financially, she vows to get her salon open again. When asked how she remains so focused, she says she doesn’t concentrate on the problems, she concentrates on solutions.
