Consumers, weary of paying high repair or replacement bills for damaged smart phones, have opted to trade the slim form factor of the original design, for the piece of mind of a ruggedized case. In fact, the market for smart phone cases, already $3.3 billion in 2012, is forecast to grow to $6.4 billion by 2015.
Today, the consumer can choose from a huge selection of cases that minimize the impact of a modest fall. Some even boast compliance to military specifications for water resistance and impact absorption (MIL-SPEC 810F and 810G).
As popular and well designed as these cases may be, they only address the symptom - the phone hitting the ground or landing in water. BungeeCase™ solves this problem head on. At first glance, it looks like many of the incumbent tough cases, with a polycarbonate inner shell and a silicone rubber outer cover. However, hidden from view, is an integrated, retractable cord attached to a wristband. The wristband, accessible at the base, slips over your wrist in an instant. Should the phone slip from your grasp, it acts like a bungee cord, preventing the phone from falling. When not in use, the cord and wristband retract back into the case.

This simple yet ingenious design is the brainchild of serial inventor, Dave Wares. He came up with the idea in late 2012, in an effort to resolve an issue he was having with his 5th grade son. The local elementary school was promoting their BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program, encouraging students could take a mobile device to school to read eBooks during class, to help minimize the number of hard copies the school needed to purchase.
Many of the students in his son’s class were participating, taking media players, smart phones or tablets to school. His son felt he was missing out, and so was eager to take his iPad to school, but Dad was not so keen. Wares had previous run a mobile device repair business, and was all too well aware of what might happen to an iPad in a classroom full of fifth graders, even inside a protective case.
An idea began to form, and after several months and about twenty prototype designs later, BungeeCase™ was born. His son now goes to school with an iPod Touch 5G inside a BungeeCase™, and so far there are no accidents to report. In fact, many of his classmates now want a BungeeCase™ too!
With a provisional patent application filed and a company established, Wares was determined to gauge the true level of potential demand, beyond the highly encouraging anecdotal evidence already received. Google had recently launched a new online service, Google Consumer Surveys, which had predicted the outcome of the 2012 US Presidential elections more accurately than all but one of the leading national polling firms.
Wares commissioned a survey of 1,000 US adults, representative of the US population, to estimate the consumer demand for the BungeeCase™. The results far exceeded expectations, with the survey showing that 9.6% of adults were either “Likely” (4.0%) or “Very Likely” (5.6%) to purchase a BungeeCase™. All the more impressive when you consider that 50% of the US adult population do not yet own a smart phone, and no one brand is reported to command more than a 5% share of the smart phone case market.
