PKCLsoft, an independent developer of apps for the iPhone and iPad has today released a new app that is designed to help people with their grocery shopping.

With the growing trend by supermarkets to target individuals via email with "specials" each week, it is becoming more and more important for people to be able to know what is and what isn't a special.

Just because the supermarket says something is discounted doesn't necessarily mean it is.

Cheapskate, a new app released to the App Store today provides people with a way to shop, and more importantly, track their spending over time.

About Cheapskate

Speaking about the creation hist latest app, "Cheapskate", Peter Easdown, the developer and founder of PKCLsoft said:

"Shopping for groceries is becoming a challenge.  What is a special, and what isn't?  Each week my wife and I receive at least 4 emails telling us what is on sale for the week.  We receive differently targeted emails sometimes showing different grocery items.

It's hard to keep track of what a good price really is.  My wife had started keeping a log book where she tracked the 'best price' for our most common grocery items.  She uses this (and a wonderful memory) to make sure that she doesn't get conned by the 'supermarketing' that hit's our inbox (and our mailbox) every week.

When I saw this I thought that there was a lot of potential to make this into an app.  With such an app, I too (with my less than stellar memory) would be able to save money when I'm sent to the supermarket."

This first release of Cheapskate provides the core functionality required to allow a shopper to build shopping lists from a comprehensive list of groceries, and shop with them quickly and efficiently.

For each grocery item on a list, the shopper can enter the price paid, and optionally, a unit price.  These are recorded against both the grocery item and the store of purchase.

The shopper then has access to graphs that can be used to show a historical view of grocery item prices.  With this it becomes easier to observe things like patterns in the pricing of groceries, or trends that might occur after an event such as the introduction of a new tax, fuel price jumps, etc.

Cheapskate has been built from the ground up to be useable world wide.  It ships with over 12,000 store listings (Australia, UK and the US), and 1,200 grocery item listings.  It supports multiple currencies, and both Metric and Imperial units.

Future updates will add features such as sharing shopping lists, sharing "best" prices and their locations with the community, and additional reporting and analysis.

Device Requirements

Cheapskate is designed to work on the iPhone or iPod Touch.  It requires iOS 6.0 or later.

Pricing:

Cheapskate will be available for $1.99 (or the local equivalent).
