Six years ago, when Civil War historian William O'Connell died, the book he spent over twenty years writing was lost. The missing manuscript, recently recovered from an old computer, is now being edited to be published. This mission is called the 180,000 Lost Words Project.
PRLog - Dec. 1, 2013 - NEW YORK -- For nearly thirty years, amateur Civil War historian and history teacher William O’Connell researched and wrote a book about General George Thomas. Before he was able to finish and publish the manuscript, he became ill and eventually died. His family believed the manuscript was lost.
In 2013, six years after his father's death, his son Joseph O’Connell found the obsolete computer his father had used. Although the computer was not operational, Joe was able to access the hard drive using a data recovery device. On the hard drive he found the entire unpublished manuscript -- 180,000 lost words. The book presents a controversial view of the Civil War and a fresh look at the Union General, George Thomas.
William O'Connell's conclusions about General Thomas were unheard of in the 1990s and his book was ahead of its time. His opinions on General Thomas are more prevalent now that other modern historians have read the same existing documents, studied the same battle reports, and reached similar conclusions. But the true story of General George Thomas and how his record was deliberately misrepresented still has not been completely told.

They have started a Kickstarter project to raise funds. The famous Danish graphic artist, Mads Madsen has agreed to allow some of his amazing colorized Civil War images to appear in the new book.
