The National Crime Agency has Detained Six Individuals in Football Spot Fixing Scheme

An ongoing inquiry into football bet fixing claims is currently underway that may have gone all the way to next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

Six people have been arrested by The National Crime Agency (NCA) in an ongoing investigation into football spot fixing. The arrests were made following allegations that a player got himself sent off in return for cash. An undercover reporter stated that Sam Sodje told him that he had punched an opponent in a League 1 game to get a red card in exchange for £70,000. Sodje also told the undercover reporter that he had arranged for £30,000 to be paid to another player for getting a yellow card in a Championship match.

NCA has confirmed it has acted on the information the undercover reporter has passed on to them. The reports, released yesterday claim the undercover reporter met with Sodje, who said that in return for tens of thousands of pounds he could arrange for footballer players in Championship games to get themselves a yellow card. Additionally, he said he could rig Premier League games and is in the process of fixing matches at next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

“An active NCA investigation is now under way and we are working closely with the Football Association and the Gambling Commission. Six people are in custody and are being questioned by NCA officers,” said an NCA spokesperson. The six people in custody were not named.

A separate investigation is also underway into an alleged international illegal betting syndicate by the NCA. Charged just last week with conspiracy to defraud contrary to common law were Hakeem Adelakun and Michael Boateng. The pair will appear in court on Wednesday and were dismissed by their club Whitehawk FC in Brighton.
