Short Film ‘Shab’ Wants World to Fall in Love… with Malta

“I believe that ‘Shab’ has the potential to reach a wide audience indeed; the core themes presented in this film can touch many hearts whilst promoting the still-developing Maltese film industry and our own culture, in a way never accomplished before on film,” says director Martin Bonnici.

April 4, 2014. California, USA /Valletta, Malta. It is a universal tale set in a location and language few have experienced first-hand. Shab is a short film about the love between husband and wife, and father and son. It is set in Malta (Gozo) and filmed in the Maltese language. Shab is more than a short film. It is a love story that captures (in 15 minutes) the intertwined lives that span generations.

The producers believe passionately that this film will serve as the perfect introduction to Malta. The common theme of love is set amidst the stunning backdrop of Gozo and the combination will both introduce and enthrall audiences. This story of love transcends language and cultural barriers.

The film’s setting in Gozo was no accident. The producer carefully selected the location as the best way to expose the world to a place, language, and culture that they might otherwise never encounter. Producer and Director Martin Bonnici explains his passion-project: I believe that ‘Shab’ has the potential to reach a wide audience indeed; the core themes presented in this film can touch many hearts whilst promoting the still-developing Maltese film industry and our own culture, in a way never accomplished before on film.” It is his desire that many lives will be touched and eyes will be opened to all that Malta has to offer.

This is a labour of love that needs funding to reach its modest budget. This short film’s budget is estimated at about €55,000 Euros. That may seem steep for a 15 minute film, but it is actually very small when considering location logistics and that fact that a ‘typical’ 70 minute film has a budget of over €1 million Euro.

Donations big and small are gratefully accepted via Shab’s Indiegogo campaign. Great perks have been added starting at just €2. Your donations will help to ensure that this touching and unique film is brought to life. Funding will also support marketing efforts to see that the completed film travels far and wide from its birthplace in the heart of Malta.

Even if you can’t donate financially, just share the links with your friends locally and internationally. Every click helps shine a light on Maltese culture. As independent film makers know, it is almost impossible to make any return from a short film. “We do it for the love of story-telling,” explains Bonnici. Follow Shab’s production and become part of cultural film history.
