PRLog - Apr. 24, 2014 - The Apereo Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the Teaching With Sakai Innovation Award (TWSIA), for 2014, sponsored by Asahi Net. The award highlights examples of educational applications built around Sakai and/or the Apereo Open Academic Environment which support innovation and transformation.

Entry: the FOLD
Melissa Halvorson (Adjunct Professional Lecturer), Marist College
Marist College has extended its leadership in educational technology with the launch of The FOLD, a student-driven, collaborative online learning resource for all things fashion, which is leveraging the power of two Apereo Foundation projects, Sakai and the Open Academic Environment (OAE), as part of the institution’s strategic Academic Community Cloud initiative. While delivering a range of learning experiences in Sakai including the first peer-to-peer fashion MOOC “The Future of Fashion”, the FOLD uses OAE to support a diverse range of online collaborative activities among fashion professionals, scholars, and enthusiasts from around the world.

Entry: SPA 231 Reading and Composition
Shannon Hahn (Discipline Chair/Instructor), Durham Technical Community College
Reading and Composition is an advanced Spanish course at Durham Community College that is taught fully online. As students have a wide range of language and technology skills, the course is designed to personalize learning, encourage peer discussion and collaboration, and provide structured reflection on course objectives. The Sakai site offers weekly lesson plans that include Blog entries, a class Wiki, and various individual and group assignments to foster collaboration and discussion through all areas of the coursework. By the end, students create a Student Page outlining their progress on a personal goal set for improving their reading or writing skills.

Entry: Pre-Health Professions Program at Wake Forest University

The Wake Forest University Pre-Health Professions Portfolio asks students seeking WFU endorsement of their medical or dental school applications to document and reflect on their learning in preparation for a healthcare career. The portfolio process replaces a paper-based procedure in which recommending faculty focused on grades as the defining factor for their decisions. The portfolio encourages pre-health professions students to understand their deeper motivations, articulate their goals and the experiences that shaped them, and incorporate guidance from their pre-health professions advisor as they prepare a portfolio presentation for the evaluation committee and the content for application to medical or dental school.

The FOLD is an interactive global community that seeks to foster network-building and information exchange among those interested in fashion scholarship. It offers a menu of free, student and faculty developed MOOCs on a range of topics, appealing to both those with a general interest in fashion and the working professional. The FOLD is also a platform for informal dialogue and social interaction among users around global street trend, cultural phenomena, product development and design. The Fold utilizes the power of the Apereo Open Academic Environment, a next-generation platform for collaboration and exchange.
Each winner will be recognized for their use of Sakai and/or Apereo Open Academic Environment for teaching and learning at the Apereo Conference in Miami, FL, June 1-4, 2014. The Teaching with Sakai Innovation Award (TWSIA) is a project of the Sakai Teaching and Learning Community. This is the 7th year of the competition.
