Writer/illustrator David Bell brings his 5 star rated epic medieval adventure to life.
PRLog - Jul. 9, 2014 - AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- "Everyone kept pestering me to do an Illustrated version of the book. Well, here it is- now can I get on with finishing book two ?" Writer/illustartor David Bell's eight month drawing marathon culminated today with the release of the long anticipated illustrated version of his sprawling medieval adventure mystery 'The Dog Hunters'. 'I've gone through thirty four pens, seven layout pads, one scanner, and enough pencils to start a graphite mine," laughs David Bell, "But it's definitely been worth it." Writer illustrator combinations are something of a rarity nowadays, but it has been Bell's ambition to be just that ever since he first read Maurice Sendak's 'Where the Wild things are', and learned to draw by copying Tintin. The new edition of 'The Dog Hunters' is threaded with over 230 detailed pen and ink drawings, including stunningly rendered scenes of seiges, storms, desperate dramas, and the unbreakable bond between Prince Llewelyn and his old friend Gelert, the magnificently faithful wolfhound.

The story: ”“While brave Welshmen die fighting English invaders, Llewelyn is forced to study Plato. But then a mighty Chinese war fleet arrives, offering to annihilate Wales's old enemy. The Chinese Emperor's price? Llewelyn's oldest friend, Gelert the legendary and stupendously flatulent wolfhound. Boy and dog are kidnapped and dragged across stormy oceans and scorpion-infested deserts in a nightmare journey involving flying dogs, berserk baboons, and thousand-year-old sailors. Thoughts of escape dissolve when the young prince meets Feiyan, a bewitching, angry girl with a secret agenda of her own. But just as he takes up the cause of the Jiang freedom fighters against the remorseless forces of the Chinese, Llewelyn discovers the horrifying truth behind their plans to use Gelert...”

However, ‘The Dog Hunters’ isn’t just a beat ’em up, fart-fugged, rowdy romp. Beneath the action it gets to the heart of loyalty and duty, why men go to war, and what terrible lengths they’ll go to in order to win. Plus there are deeper subtexts of the perils of genetic engineering and biological warfare. “Mainly though,” says David Bell, “it’s the story of a young man trying to prove himself, and a huge wolfhound with spectacular problems with flatulence".

About the author: David Bell grew up on a diet of ‘TinTin’, ‘Judge Dredd’ and ‘Sharpe’ stories, CGI free action movies, and studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Liverpool Art School. With a successful career in London advertising under his belt, he crossed the world to do ads in New Zealand, eventually setting up Adschool, Auckland’s internationally acclaimed course for aspiring young writers and art directors. But the Welsh legend of Gelert the Faithful Wolfhound came with him, haunting his memories over the years until he knew he had to do something about it. So, several decades since he stood bawling his eyes out at Gelert’s grave in Beddgelert, Snowdonia, David Bell has brought the brave old dog back to life with a book that both fills a gap in the Young Adult book market and appeals to adults with a hankering for days gone by.

David lives in Auckland NZ and travels the world with Jeneal and Frank, their son.
