Northwest Tucson Compounding Pharmacy Staff Receives Quality Certification

Entire Staff is PCCA Comprehensive Compounding Course (C3) Certified
PRLog - Jul. 18, 2014 - TUCSON, Ariz. -- Dr. Justin Brock, PharmD. and Melissa Chavez, CPhT have both successfully completed the C3 certification.  The Professional Compounding Centers of America (PCCA) hosts pharmacists and pharmacy technicians from the United States and Canada at their headquarters in Houston, TX.  Compounding is the pharmacy method of custom-preparing medications to meet prescriber’s and patient’s individual needs.

At PCCA’s C3 training course, Dr. Brock and Ms. Chavez, compounded a number of dosage forms, including oral, veterinary, and topical preparations, among others.  In addition to their time in the PCCA lab, class time prepared both of them to select the correct bases or delivery form depending on the drug or patient/prescriber need.

“As an example, many patients are allergic to preservatives or dyes, so they are sensitive to standard drugs from a regular pharmacy,” says Dr. Brock.  “With a prescription, we can compound the medication by altering the form to make it more appropriate for the patient.  For example, altering the medication into a lozenge, lollipop or gel.  This gets the patient closer to achieving a more positive therapeutic outcome.”

Headquartered in Houston, Texas since 1981, PCCA provides compounding pharmacists with training classes and events, pharmaceutical ingredients, equipment, and expertise to help them compound unique dosage forms.  PCCA has more than 3,900 independent pharmacist members in the US, Canada, and Australia.  More information can be found at www.pccarx.com.
