Key West Florida Promises An Explosive Fourth Of July

What better way to celebrate the holiday event of the summer than by visiting the one place in the United States where it is summer all the time in Key West, Florida?

Every holiday has something that it wouldn't be the same without. Christmas needs a tree, Memorial Day needs a picnic and the Fourth of July needs fireworks and lots of them. Every year, Key West, Florida puts together one of the biggest Independence Day parties of the year, and with the 4th falling on a weekend this year, it promises to be even bigger than most.

"The fireworks shooting out over the beach is one of the few events that everyone on the island looks forward to," said David Johanson of the Key West Rotary Club, the primary sponsor of the fireworks display. "Like a lot of other small beach towns, there can be a 'personality division' between the longtime residents and the tourists on vacation, but not on this day. It doesn't matter if you are just here for a few days to take part in one of the many island weddings or you're a Conch whose family goes back several generations, there is nothing like watching fireworks over the ocean."

The fireworks are just one way that people enjoying their island vacations can celebrate the Fourth of July. This year is also the 6th annual Fourth of July bar crawl, which takes place along the historic Key West harbor and includes stops at several of the island's legendary watering holes. For those tourists who are more athletically minded, the Rotary Club has partnered up with Crime Stoppers to offer a 5k fun run with all the proceeds going to charity. Of course, regardless of what people do during the day, they are all looking forward to doing the same thing at night.

"We get people who have spent the day on the water…jet skiing, snorkeling and parasailing…who show up at the beach still in their bathing suits," Mr. Johanson replied when asked about the clientele that watches the fireworks. "We also get people still dressed from an outdoor dinner of casual elegance at the Roof Top Cafe, who stroll down after dessert. In the end, it doesn't matter. Fourth of July fireworks are one of those things that everyone enjoys, and helps bring us all a little bit closer together. What could be better than that?"
