Who isn’t a ‘data scientist’ in 2014?

Here is Wikipedia’s definition…color me confused. I deem anyone a ‘data scientist’ in 2014 , as a confusionist.

The timeline what really matters most. Search and UI are what matter after that. Finally, its how you read this infinite tape that separates the big winners from the losers in the investing business.

Of course Facebook would argue otherwise. They should. It’s never been about the timeline for them. But, they have gotten so big and the multiple so high, that the timeline and real-time now matters to them. I would not bet against them, but I am not the market.

Twitter is the opposite. The timeline is what made them. Now, they are busting it up for the sake of quarterly numbers and Wall Street.

Facebook wants to be more like Twitter and Twitter more like Facebook…ugh.

Maybe this is great. I do know hundreds of companies will benefit. Those that can display Twitter’s timeline the best and for the right customers will be huge. Those that build parallel timelines that do one thing well (like Stocktwits) should thrive.

Now that Twitter owns GNIP, I don’t need a data scientist to tell me that the price Twitter charges Bloomberg and others for the firehose eventually rises…and no data will tell me how Bloomberg reacts. I have my opinions, but that’s not from data, that’s from history.

Facebook is still Mark Zuckerberg… and he’s defied all the data and the scientists.
