Pure Storage Named a Leader in Inaugural Gartner Magic Quadrant for Solid-State Arrays

Pure Storage, the all-flash enterprise storage array company, announced today that it has been positioned in the Leaders Quadrant of the inaugural Magic Quadrant for Solid-State Arrays (SSA) by Gartner, Inc, a leading global research firm. The news comes on the heels of Pure Storage being ranked #2 in worldwide SSA market share behind IBM, based on Gartner’s 2013 revenue estimates, and the fastest growing of the vendors evaluated. 1

According to Gartner, companies considered to be “leaders” drive the market’s transformation with a clear vision and a strong ability to execute. Leaders in SSA have generally made strong customer gains. They provide feature sets that are appropriate for current customer use case needs. Leaders also show evidence of superior vision and execution for anticipated requirements related to technology, methodology or means of delivery. Leaders typically demonstrate solid customer satisfaction with overall SSA capabilities and/or related service and support.

Founded in 2009, Pure Storage was a pioneer of the SSA category and was first to market with a viable enterprise-class all-flash storage array that could achieve cost and functional parity with legacy disk solutions, and quickly established itself in the incumbent entrenched enterprise storage market, culminating in its leader position in Gartner’s first Magic Quadrant for Solid-State Arrays today. The company has raised $470 million in private equity funding to-date and is valued at more than $3 billion, making it one of the highly valued, venture-backed private technology companies in the world according to the Wall Street Journal. Having achieved 700 percent year-over-year growth in 2013, Pure Storage is also one of the fastest growing enterprise storage companies in the industry’s history.

In 2014, the company has continued to accelerate, rapidly expanding its global operational footprint and employee base across 6 continents, and forging new strategic reseller partnerships to further develop its sales channels worldwide. It also introduced two new storage arrays to its flagship FlashArray product line—the FA-405 and FA-450—and the 4.0 release of its Purity Operating Environment software, featuring native asynchronous replication. Through this expansion, Pure Storage has effectively extended its market reach and increased its support for Tier 1 storage use cases and mission-critical environments.

“There’s no question that the inaugural Gartner Magic Quadrant represents an inflection point for the solid-state array category,” said Scott Dietzen, CEO at Pure Storage. “A great deal of hard work and innovation by both Pure and its competitors has been invested in the creation of the all-flash array category, which we believe is positioned to supersede Tier 1 mechanical disk arrays, a roughly $15B annual market opportunity. AFAs like Pure’s FlashArray are plug-compatible with legacy disk arrays, but dramatically faster, more space and power efficient, reliable and simpler, yet cost less. Undoubtedly, the competition will continue to be fierce, as evidenced by the growing number of incumbents coming to compete on the playing field we staked out five years ago. However, we believe that with well satisfied customers and partners, the best team in the storage business, and a two year technology lead, we will prevail.”
