Located in slum communities, the Centres are designed to serve and partner with underprivileged urban communities, providing access to education to people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life.
PRLog - Sep. 2, 2014 - GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- The ARC Trust, along with Andrea and Anik Singal (twitter), is proud to announce plans to build 20 Dream Centres in the city of Mumbai and across India.

The goal of the project is to work holistically with the children of these areas to achieve their goals with education, encouragement, and nurturing, while giving them access to affordable, quality pre-primary education in English with a global perspective. This early training will prepare them for their entry into the Indian Schooling System.

The first Dream Centre was completed on June 7, 2014, in the slum communities in Andheri (Mumbai). This area is home to 4 million people, a fifth of Mumbai’s current population of approximately 20 million. Sixty percent of these live in slums, and Andheri is home to hundreds of slum communities. Two additional slum communities have been chosen for the next two Dream Centres in Andheri West.

In order to formulate each Centre’s goals and strategies, a Needs & Situational Analysis survey of the surrounding area is conducted. A team of social workers will analyze the data and construct an intervention plan to complete each Centre. Curriculum will be in English, and classes will include media, arts and creative workshops, dance and drama, photography, health awareness clinics, and support classes.

Ian Hendricks, co-founder of The ARC Trust, said, “We know every child has a dream and we want to help them achieve that dream by giving them a good start in life. Hence our programs have been created to educate, while also allowing for the creativity of a child to come forth.”

Each Dream Centre will be based on four key elements:

Education: Pre-Primary School /Adult Literacy

Creative Arts and Media

Wellness Clinics: Health & Sanitation

Dream Workshops

Approximate setup cost per Dream Centre is estimated to be USD $30,000 for the first year. Working in partnership with the local communities, the Dream Centres are designed to become self-funding within 12-18 months. Typical setup time is about six months.

National statistics indicate primary school enrollments are shrinking while the population continues to grow, a trend that will result in a large percentage of the adult population being illiterate.. The ARC Trust’s objective is to prepare the current urban, underprivileged children to access continued education along with other agencies to implement the Indian Governments Right to Education Act.

The ARC Trust, cofounded by Ian and Naomi Hendricks, is an NGO registered with the charity commission in Mumbai Reg no: E 29811.
