There is little doubt that the Christian Church has long been a repository of bias and intolerance through the centuries, having persecuted unbelievers and “sinners” mercilessly. Among the most often targeted are homosexuals whom traditional Christian belief has labeled as sexually immoral. This unjustified discrimination of this large community has often prevented many LGBT people from seeking spiritual solace from the Church or forcing them to hide their gender or sexual orientation. A new project by Art of Pop, “Jesus Christ Sex Symbol” attempts to reconcile these two communities by producing music, theatrical shows and information detailing the enormous pain that these antiquated “Christian” beliefs have engendered.
“Jesus Christ Sex Symbol” is an outreach program that uses Broadway style musical theater to showcase the painful stigma that traditional Christian intolerance has caused. In addition to the show, Art of Pop will also release the music on an album. JCSS is intended to help communicate the value of the LGBT community to the Christian Church, as well as the value of belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior to gay people. Using a suite of memorable dance songs, JCSS showcases the emotional pain that so many LGBT people have suffered at the hands of believers.
In order for “Jesus Christ Sex Symbol” to be successful as a commercial enterprise and as an outreach project, this project requires considerable artistic and financial investment. Art of Pop is currently seeking $35,000 through a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo in order to obtain recording equipment, rent studio time, market the album, rent show rehearsal space, and produce the musical show. While most world class musical shows require millions of dollars to create, the producers of “Jesus Christ Sex Symbol” are willing to work with this seed money to generate an initial minimalist show and album which will be used to secure additional financing.
