ITT’s Veam Brand Highlights High Temperature Bayonet Connectors at 2014 InnoTrans

ITT Corporation (NYSE:ITT) and its Veam brand are leading the way in the rail industry by providing robust, high-temperature connectors in response to the high standards of the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI). The European Rail Agency developed these specific TSI requirements for safety in railway tunnels to help ensure rail passengers can evacuate a train during the event of a fire.

With the development of the HTB series, the ITT Veam team took the reliable coupling mechanism design of their well-established CIR series and modified the materials and specifications to meet the stringent fire code standards. HTB series delivers unparalleled durability and reliability in the most extreme conditions, to help enhance passenger safety.

“With more than 60 years of experience in delivering ruggedized and customized interconnect solutions to the rail market, ITT Veam understands the critical role connectors play in rail safety,” said Guenter Schall, director product management with ITT’s Interconnect Solutions Transportation & Industrial business. “Achieving the high standards of the ERA’s TSI requirements is not easy, but through a stainless steel shell and an innovative ceramic insulator, we have provided a customized design that will protect the vital components of rail critical applications.”

Connectors are a primary source of power distribution on trains, and it is vital that the connectors powering the critical control signals continue to work for a minimum of 15 minutes if exposed to the ISO 834-1 heating curve (at 738 degrees Celsius), to allow the train driver to move away from the site of the fire.

“ITT Veam has the knowledge and experience with high-precision connectors designed for highly engineered critical components,” said Gary Ashurst, vice president and general manager of ITT’s Interconnect Solutions Transportation and Industrial business. “During testing at independent laboratories, the high-temperature HTB connector was successfully able to withstand 800 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes while maintaining critical control signals, exceeding the standard 15 minutes set by the requirements of the TSI.”

At InnoTrans, ITT is also highlighting the Veam Power Platform System, providing a custom and highly engineered multi-pole power interconnection system, which fits to multiple applications: railcar to bogie, braking equipment, inter-vehicle, power conversion and distribution. These connectors feature a compact design, support a high performance in operating voltage and are constructed to withstand harsh weather conditions.

ITT’s exhibit will be located in Hall 10.1, Stand 216.
