Barnes & Noble Announces Free October Storytime Lineup

Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the nation’s largest retail bookseller and the leading retailer of content, digital media and educational products, today announced its October lineup of free Storytime events for children and families, all designed to celebrate the joy of reading, creativity and fun.

The events center around the popular children’s books The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak; Dr. Seuss’ Horton and the Kwuggerbug; Click Clack Boo!: A Tricky Treat by Doreen Cronin and illustrator Betsy Lewin; and the October Storytime en Español for Hispanic Heritage Month, Pio Peep!(Traditional Spanish Nursery Rhymes).

The month kicks off with The Book with No Pictures Storytime on Tuesday, October 7. You might think a picture book with no pictures would be boring and serious, but this innovative and wildly funny read-aloud title by award-winning humorist and actor B.J. Novak will turn any skeptic into a fan. Children ages 5 to 8 will certainly laugh during this cleverly irreverent and irresistibly silly Storytime as they discover everything on the page has to be said by the person reading it aloud—even if the words say “BLORK” or “BLUURF!” Participants will also enjoy a reading of the NOOK Book® version of the story. Fun activities will round out the event.

Dr. Seuss’ Horton and the Kwuggerbug – October is No-Bullying Month. To raise awareness, on Tuesday, October 21, stores nationwide will celebrate friendship as everyone’s favorite elephant, Horton, trumpets the rallying cry: “A person’s a person no matter how small.” Horton and the Kwuggerbug features three never-before published Dr. Seuss stories—a must for Seuss fans, kids and collectors. The tale will also be enjoyed on the new Samsung Galaxy Tab® 4 NOOK®.

Click Clack Boo!: A Tricky Treat – On Saturday, October 25, all stores will host a Halloween Storytime with a reading of Click Clack Boo!: A Tricky Treat. Children and parents will find it hard to resist the new picture book from Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin, the team that created the bestselling book Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type. Farmer Brown does not like Halloween, so he draws the shades, puts on his footy pajamas and climbs into bed. But do you think the barnyard animals have any respect for a man in footy pajamas? No, they do not! For them, the Halloween party has just begun—and we all know these critters far prefer tricks over treats. Children are encouraged to dress up in their Halloween costume for a parade inside the store, and collect a Click Clack Boo sticker and enjoy some treats.

Cuentacuentos: Storytime en Español – To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, from October 1-15, select Barnes & Noble stores invite children and their parents to experience a reading of the Spanish-language picture book, Pio Peep! (Traditional Spanish Nursery Rhymes). This special edition of the beloved bilingual collection of traditional Spanish and Latin American nursery rhymes includes a CD with selected songs from the book that may be used for sing-alongs, read-alongs, or as an aid in reading comprehension for beginning readers. The book and CD are sure to delight children, while also reinforcing the pride they feel in their cultural heritage and teaching those encountering these songs for the first time about Hispanic traditions and culture. Activities and word practice will also be a part of the event.

Language learning through immersion-style events is key to the Common Core Standards and other curriculum programs. Barnes & Noble’s Spanish Storytimes will appeal to parents who want their children to learn a language and native Spanish speakers looking to enjoy their language and increase their children’s vocabulary through listening to stories read aloud.

Barnes & Noble Storytimes are free and open to the public. Customers should visit the Barnes & Noble Store Locator for specific dates/times of events at their local store.
