PRLog - Oct. 8, 2014 - Oncology Nurse Navigator, Margot Spies, was presented with the Best Practice Award for her innovation in the area of Survivorship by the Academy of Oncology Nurse and Patient Navigators (AONN+). This award celebrates navigators who have implemented novel initiatives in support of cancer patients. The award was presented in September during the 5th Annual AONN+ Navigation and Survivorship Conference held in Orlando, Florida. The AONN+ is the largest national specialty organization dedicated to improving patient care and quality of life by defining, enhancing and promoting the role of oncology nurse and patient navigators.

Spies is an Oncology Nurse Navigator at the University of Maryland, Shore Regional Cancer Center, which is accredited by the Commission on Cancer American College of Surgeons. As an accredited program, a standard of care is to provide a Survivorship Care Plan to patients diagnosed with cancer.

Survivorship care planning begins as soon as a cancer treatment plan is established. Patient Navigation focuses on facilitating care and support for cancer patients from the time of a cancer diagnosis into Survivorship. Part of the Patient Navigation process includes creating a Survivorship Care Plan, which provides patients with a summary of their treatment, contact information for the care team, recommendations for future clinical exams and cancer surveillance testing, as well as referrals to support services and resources. “A Survivorship Care Plan is an invaluable tool for cancer patients. After reviewing and being given their SCP they have more confidence in their understanding of their disease, its treatment, the side effects, long range problems and potential outcomes. They have a chance to discuss setting goals, lifestyle changes and the necessity of a lifetime of continuous surveillance in their survivorship,” shared Spies. “I spend each day talking with patients and their families about the full spectrum of support that is available to them to address the physical, emotional and spiritual issues surrounding cancer, as well as survivorship,” says Spies. “I’m here to help ease the challenges so patients are able to follow their treatment regimen and focus on getting well, living well and setting realistic goals.”

“One of the most valuable resources for me to provide Survivorship Care Plans to our patients is our Nursenav Oncology software,” says Spies. “Nursenav Oncology allows me to follow my patients from diagnosis through survivorship, creating a Survivorship Care Plan that is rich with information, with terms that the patient can clearly understand and act upon as needed. Nursenav Oncology aids me in delivering the highest level of patient care.

Spies is a certified by the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) with over 30 years of experience working with patients whose lives have been touched by cancer.  She also completed the George Washington Cancer Institute’s “Executive Training on Navigation and Survivorship” and has traveled extensively to observe a variety of oncology navigator and survivorship programs at hospital and clinics across the country.
