New Study Shows High-Risk Medicare Advantage Members’ Longevity, Independence is Linked to One-on-One Support

Medicare Advantage members participating in Humana At Home, a holistic care management program, are living longer than non-participants, according to a peer-reviewed, retrospective cohort study released this week by Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM).

The study monitored differences in survival rates between two groups of Medicare Advantage members: those who participated in Humana At Home’s telephonic care program and those who did not. The study was conducted over a two-year period with participants averaging 71 years of age.

This study found individuals with the highest risk for disease progression benefited the most from Humana At Home. Data show these high-risk Humana At Home participants had a 15.9 percent greater survival rate than non-participants. In addition, the study found the oldest participants experienced the largest benefit in two-year survival rate with a 7.8 percent difference between participants and non-participants.

“Our results show care management really does work, especially amongst the high-risk, older population,” said Humana At Home President Eric C. Rackow, M.D. “This is a critical insight for the Medicare eligible community and healthcare providers who are looking to optimize Medicare Advantage programs. It also supports our belief that, with the right framework, healthcare management programs can be successful and slow the progression of disease and chronic illnesses.”

Humana At Home participants had access to health resources and guidance according to their specific health needs. The program addressed various domains of functioning including, health, cognitive, financial, environment, psychosocial and behavioral.

Other key findings and details from the study include:

• Participant and control groups were propensity score matched 1:1 using the following variables: the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicare Advantage risk score, an internal risk score, geographic region, Medicare Advantage plan type, age, and gender.
• Differences in cumulative survival rates increased over time from 1.5 percent at six months, to 2.3 percent at one year, to 2.8 percent at two years.
• The study involved 57,041 seniors who received Humana At Home care management to address financial, medical and psychosocial challenges.
