Stats of Illegal immigration:

It was estimated by the Department of Homeland Securities that in 2012, there were approximately 11.4 million immigrants living illegally in US. This is slightly less than the figure of 11.5 million in the year 2011.

  • Top 5 countries of origin of these illegal immigrants are Mexico (59%), El Salvador (6%), Guatemala (5%), Honduras (3%) & Philippines (3%). 
  • Preferred destinations inside US where these illegal immigrants settled were California (25%), Texas (16%), Florida (6%), New York (5%), & Illinois (5%). 
  • Nearly half of the illegal immigrants to the US were male (53%) & majority of them (61%) were in the age group of 24-44. More than  half (57%) of these illegal immigrants who were aged more than 45 were females. 
  • In 2012, 643,474 illegal immigrants were booked under the law. 69% of those apprehended belonged to Mexico.  
  • Of the 419.384 illegal immigrants that were deported from US in 2012, nearly half (47%) were found to have criminal records & convictions. A staggering 73% belonged to Mexico while Guatemala (9%), Honduras (7%), El Salvador (4%) were the other top countries where these immigrants were deported to.


UAC

UAC is an acronym used by the US Customs & Border Protection to refer to Unaccompanied Alien Children. UAC are handed over to the Office of Refugee Resettlement for their care while their cases are being considered by the immigration authorities.

  • There were 60000 UAC in 2014 while they were 24668 & 14721in 2013 & 2012 respectively. 
  • The budget set aside for UAC was $911 million in 2014 while it was $376 million in 2013 & $278million in 2012. 
  • As far as countries of origin are concerned, Guatemala (37%) ranked first while others in the list were Honduras (30%), El Salvador (26%), Mexico (3%) & Ecuador (2%). 
  • In 2013, more than 2/3rd  of the UAC were boys (73%) & 3/4th of these were aged 14-18. 
  • More than 100 UAC shelters are under operation at present with most of them being located along Mexico border. 35 days is the average stay of UAC in these shelters.
