Caledonia – Latest Single from Across the Sea To Ireland the Debut Album from Rhoda Barfoot

Caledonia the new single drawn from her debut album “Across the Sea To Ireland” from Celtic Singer Rhoda Barfoot is now available from itunes.

“Let me tell you that I love you and I think about you all the time”… so goes the lyric of Caledonia, the latest single from internationally acclaimed Northern Irish Violinist and Singer, Rhoda Barfoot. It’s a gorgeous track, well delivered with a gentle, almost haunting sound that is reminiscent of Enya.

In it she revisits a song written by legendary Scottish composer Dougie Maclean and heavily featured as the audio back drop of this year’s momentous Scottish Independence Referendum and as befitting a fellow Celt (she’s Irish he’s a Scot) the song has been treated in a thoughtful, reverential manner.

Already receiving tremendous reviews in certain sections of the Media with initial sound bites such as “hard to put into words but simply magnificent”, “an usual voice…so haunting and appealing” and more tellingly perhaps “totally amazing…a fantastic voice”.

Allegedly written by Maclean in 10 minutes on a beach in the south of France whilst Maclean was on a busking tour with some Irish musicians, the song has gone on to become the unofficial Scots Anthem and been covered by a wide array of stars (Frankie Miller, Paolo Nutini, Amy Macdonald and such like) but perhaps none with the openly straightforward and refreshingly honest treatment by the talented Miss Barfoot.

Caledonia sums up the gut wrenching heartache for the “old Country” that the Celts seem to feel whenever they need to reminisce.  With this in mind, Rhoda’s treatment of Caledonia fits the bill. As another reviewer said “I’ve spent the last hour mesmerized by her songs and her playing, I loved Caledonia” and this is the real success of this arrangement, the simplicity of the beautiful accompaniment by this small group of musicians allows Rhoda’s voice and her deep sentiment for this song to shine.

The first single from Rhoda’s forthcoming album Across the Sea to Ireland, Caledonia was recorded in Nashville and features a stellar line-up of musicians: John Deaderick on piano (Alison Krauss, Dixie Chicks) and Byron House on upright bass (Robert Plant, Emmylou Harris).  It was produced and engineered by Grammy-nominated producer Erick Jaskowiak (Della Mae, Abigail Washburn).

A close acquaintance involved in the project said “I am so impressed with her style, manners and grace..She is a very special person.  I told her if she ever needs anything in Nashville just ask”. True praise indeed.

Listening to some clips of the other tracks on the forthcoming album Across the Sea to Ireland, Caledonia is definitely where Miss Barfoot is at right now and if this is a measure of what we might expect from the rest of the album I can’t wait to hear it.
