6th World Congress on Women’s Mental HealthDr. Tanya Douglas-Holland, a survivor of severe depression herself, wants to invest in the next generation of women leaders.

With increased opportunities for women come increased expectations – and often stress. Tanya Douglas-Holland, MD, MPH knows from personal experience.

Dr. Douglas-Holland overcame a battle with clinical depression to become a very highly respected healthcare professional in Georgia, and now she is working to help other women succeed in a pressure-filled environment. She is organizing the second Developing Leaders in Women’s Health Award, which will send one or two students to the the sixth World Congress on Women’s Mental Health in Tokyo, March 22-25, 2015.

“Our next generation of women leaders is suffering,” said Douglas-Holland, who pointed out that, according to a 2011 American College Health Association report, 91 percent of female college students felt overwhelmed.

“Living away from home for the first time, the stress of wanting to succeed, adapting to new routines and studies, trying to make new friends, getting insufficient sleep, feeling pressure to use alcohol and drugs, worrying about money – it all takes a toll.”

The World Congress on Women’s Mental Health focuses on enabling young women to succeed in today’s hectic world. Topics include:

• Factors that affect women’s mental health
• Women’s roles in marriage, family and society
• Domestic violence
• Promoting better education about women’s mental health

Yves-Yvette Young, currently a grad student at University of California-Berkeley School of Public Health, was a winner of the first Developing Leaders in Women’s Health Award in 2013.She attended the World Congress on Women’s Mental Health in Lima, Peru.

“I learned about the importance of prioritizing tasks,” she said. “It is possible to achieve all your goals, but maybe not all of them at the same time.

“I got to meet women professionals from all over the world and made some good international connections. This was an amazing trip that expanded my world view and gave me another perspective of health affecting women globally.”

In order to finance a trip for one student, and possibly two, for this event in Tokyo, Douglas-Holland has launched an Indiegogo campaign, which can be viewed at www.indiegogo.com/projects/developing-leaders-in-women-s-health-2014-2015.

For each student, $3,800 is needed for airfare, hotel accommodations, registration and the conference dinner.

Donations of any amount are welcome. For a $30 donation, backers will receive a T-shirt from the conference. A $75 pledge is good a set of authentic Japanese chopsticks and for $300, you are rewarded with a Takuyo silk scarf.

Douglas-Holland has also launched Stress Free Sorority (SFS), a national campaign that encourages women to increase awareness about emotional and physical well-being.
