International Campaigner Praises Australia’s Leadership In Asbestos Awareness 'November is Australia’s National Asbestos Awareness Month'
PRLog - Nov. 23, 2014 - SYDNEY, Australia -- Britain’s leading international campaigner, Laurie Kazan-Allen of the International Ban Asbestos Secretariat (IBAS), was a keynote speaker at Australia’s first International Conference on Asbestos Awareness & Management hosted by the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency, praised Australia as taking a leadership role in tackling the issue and current dangers of asbestos-containing products in Australia.

In speaking on Campaigning for Justice: On the Asbestos Frontline 2014, Ms Kazan-Allen said, “Through Asbestos Awareness Month Australia is taking an international leadership role in the current fight against asbestos-related diseases by alerting Australians to the ever-present dangers of asbestos that remain in many homes and in buildings Australia-wide.”

“In the UK we have just one day to raise awareness of asbestos but Australia conducts a month-long campaign which is able to effectively deliver this vital and potentially life-saving message on a much broader and more comprehensive scale across the country.

“Internationally, the war on asbestos is being fought hard on two fronts – countries where asbestos has been banned; and those where consumption remains legal with the campaign to outlaw asbestos use growing in strength and scope.

“With a complete ban on asbestos coming into force in Australia in 2003, the frontline of the battle here relates to the high volume of asbestos products that remain in homes built or renovated before 1987 and the importance of educating homeowners, renovators and tradies about where it may be found and how to manage it safely.

“The first international asbestos conference in Australia was a landmark in the global dialogue on this deadly substance and I believe that the conference revealed the passion Australians share for a world that is free of asbestos-related disease.

“Australian and global experts engaged in discussions with delegates about the part which Australia should play in the campaign to eradicate asbestos-related disease at home and overseas,” said Ms Kazan-Allen.

“It was incredibly positive to hear of the progress being achieved in Australia on a wide range of issues including the need to protect citizens from asbestos within the national infrastructure and the work of the authorities to address crucial incidents such as the Mr Fluffy issue in the ACT and some regions of NSW.

“I was thrilled to meet so many passionate Australians working with trade unions, victims, local authorities and other civil society partners on this issue.

“However, I was absolutely delighted to finally meet ‘Betty the ADRI House,’ a house on wheels that tours demonstrating where asbestos might be found in and around homes and a model that we are enthusiastic  to emulate to help address the issues of asbestos products in buildings and homes throughout the UK.

“With one in every three homes in Australia containing asbestos, it’s encouraging that Australians are urged to Get to kNOw asbestos in NOvember during Asbestos Awareness Month by visiting asbestosawareness.com.au to learn the dangers of asbestos and how to manage it safely,” she said.

The Asbestos Awareness Campaign created and conducted by Insight Communications for the Asbestos Education Committee has to date received six industry awards including two international awards: a Global Alliance for Public Relations & Communications Management 2014 COMM PRIX Award presented at the World PR Forum in Madrid in September and the International Association for Measurement & Evaluation of Communications (AMEC) 2014 Communication Effectiveness Award presented last June in Amsterdam.
