From The University level to The Kindergarten Classroom, LIMBS International is Empowering Students to be Global Citizens Through Their Educational Initiative, Learning for Limbs

El Paso, TX (November 25th, 2014) – Driving its mission to restore mobility to millions of amputees around the world, LIMBS International has extended its reach from the University level to the Kindergarten classroom by developing the Learning 4 Limbs (L4L) program.  The core of L4L provides lesson plans and engineering projects to the schools free of charge, educating and enabling students to make a difference across the globe.

The Learning for LIMBS program was born out of a desire to extend the educational roots of LIMBS International from the University level all the way to the Kindergarten classroom. Commencing from a partnership between teachers and students, LIMBS International believes that the combination of young enthusiasm and guided learning can change the world. To accomplish this, L4L is partnering with teachers and schools across the country to raise awareness of amputees in the developing world, empowering students as global citizens via community service, and classroom learning to make a tangible difference in the lives of amputees.

At its core, L4L is a STEM based, service-learning program designed to educate students about global issues such as poverty, war and access to medical care. L4L provides real world connections to demonstrate how these factors contribute to the rising number of amputees worldwide and how LIMBS is using STEM to make a difference.  Students are also provided the opportunity to participate in a service-learning project that focuses on providing the components for a new leg to an amputee through LIMBS and its network of partner clinics around the world.

“It is exciting to be able to reach and educate students at all grade levels to give our youth another perspective on the world and add a unique dynamic to their education” said Trevor Bergman, Executive Director for LIMBS. “The impact that Learning for Limbs has demonstrated highlights the dedication, determination and passion that students have to make a tangible difference.”

Most recently, Humble, TX ISD joined Longview, TX ISD as a flagship district. Humble ISD’s fundraising and awareness campaigns resulted in 51 prosthetic legs sent to individuals in nine different countries, raising more than $15,000. It began with four International Baccalaureate students from Humble High School, Ivan Diaz, Andrew Legall, Faran Riyaz, and Yesenia Vargas who developed and implemented a simple but very effective campaign called “Out on a LIMB” to raise money for the cause. For one day, students at Humble High School were asked to participate in a walk-a-thon by simply wearing pedometers throughout the school day and then logging the distance traveled. This approach was used throughout Humble ISD and later shared at theInternational Baccalaureate Conference of the Americas in Washington, D.C. as the service learning project of the year for Texas IB Schools.

In 2014, thus far, L4L has provided 190 legs to amputees in over 12 countries and currently has 50 partner schools participating, with more joining each week. They are on track to have over 100 partner schools in 2015. If your school is interested in making a difference in the world by becoming a Learning for Limbs partner school please contact LIMBS International at info@limbs.org.
