Staying Safe this Holiday Season

While you might have your eyes set on scoring a great deal and finding the best holiday gifts for your loved ones, burglars might have their eyes set on you–especially when you’re away and distracted from your home or automobile. Boston attorney Dianna L. Abdala wants you to be safe this holiday season by keeping these holiday safety tips in mind.

Boston, Massachusetts, December 16, 2014 – The holidays are here in full-force, and they’ll be over before you know it, but it’s still very important to keep yourself and your family safe during the hustle and bustle of a busy holiday shopping season.

“It’s no secret that in Boston, burglaries and attempted burglaries are quite high during the month of December and the closer we get to the holiday season. Christmas and New Year’s Eve typically have more reported burglaries or attempted burglaries than any other days in the year. These statistics aren’t only for home burglaries, but also include businesses,” says attorney Dianna L. Abdala.  Abdala, a criminal defense attorney in Boston offers the following safety tips to keep your family and your home safe this holiday season.

  • Lock everything! It might seem very obvious, but a lot of burglars get into a house or automobile because they were left open or unlocked. Sometimes locking the door may just simply slip your mind, but it’s important to double check and make sure doors are locked and remain locked.
  • Never leave any valuables out in plain sight. If you have valuable jewelry or extra cash laying around, it may be time to invest in a safe or security box to keep your valuables protected from burglary.
  • In today’s modern world, people are extra inclined to make it known where they are going, what they are buying, and other personal information on social media. Resist the urge to broadcast that you’re going to be away from home on the internet. Unfortunately, strangers may see that you’re not home and have an easy opportunity to take what they need.
  • When you are away from home, consider leaving a light on. By doing so, your home appears to be occupied. If you’re hesitant on leaving your lights on, consider leaving the television on or doing something that makes it appear that you are home.
  • If you have an alarm system, activate it!
  • When shopping, especially at night, try to park in well-lit areas. Once you get into your car, be sure to lock your doors immediately.

In the United States, Christmas is supposed to invoke images of family, gifts, happiness, and fun. Keep your family and belongings safe by being proactive with the tips above. “Sadly, the rate of burglary and attempted burglaries spikes during the holidays, but following safety guidelines can ensure you don’t add to the statistics, and your belongings remain your belongings,” says Abdala.
