Brainwave Sensing Device ‘U-Wake’ Launches on Kickstarter To Prevent Driver Fatigue

On Dec 3rd, ASEV display launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for their newest product, U-Wake, a smart wearable brainwave analyzer that can detect a driver’s fatigue level and send alerts if they are falling asleep. Seeing as driving fatigue is responsible for over 100,000 accidents per year and 1,550 deaths, the U-Wake will help improve road safety and save lives.

“The idea of U-Wake was conceived when we noticed that there weren’t enough devices that alert users they are experiencing driving fatigue BEFORE it takes place,” says the team behind the project. “Therefore, we set out to create something that will do exactly that to help users understand their alertness and take necessary actions when experiencing fatigue.”

The device functions as a light weight wearable headband that uses Bluetooth technology to transmit brainwave data to the U-Wake smartphone app, which analyzes and monitors the wearer’s brainwaves. An easy-to-read dashboard gives users an indication of their fatigue level by displaying a score from 0 to 100, with a score of 80 being unsuitable to operate a motor vehicle.

“We have conducted extensive research over the past few years to ensure that we know exactly which area of the brain is in charge of detecting fatigue and that the accuracy of the U-Wake app in detecting fatigue is over 90%” – U-Wake team.

Although the U-Wake smart device will initially be used to monitor a user’s fatigue levels while driving, in the future, the company plans to open their SDK, which will allow anyone to write an app that can use the U-Wake hardware EEG-reading technology. This could lead to apps that will help a user relax or enhance their memory.

Having already extensively researched EEG technology and developed a prototype of the U-Wake, the team decided to take the project to Kickstarter to help finance the mass production of the product and give initial supporters access to exclusive rewards, like the ability to become an early-adopter and own one of the first U-Wakes. At the upper supporter tiers, backers can also have the chance to fly to Taiwan, meet the founder of the company, Sam Wu, and be involved in future product designs.

The project will be live on Kickstarter until February 1st, during which time supporters can claim one of the above mentioned rewards and become a U-Wake backer. For more information, check out the Kickstarter here or contact the creators below.
