Tennessee Gains Manufacturing Jobs for Third Straight Year as Auto Sector Spurs Growth

Manufacturers’ News, Inc.-- For a third straight year, Tennessee gained manufacturing jobs, reports the 2015 Tennessee Manufacturers Register®, a manufacturers database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI). According to data collected by MNI, Tennessee manufacturers added 4,473 jobs, or 1.1%, from September 2013 to September 2014.

Manufacturers’ News reports Tennessee is now home to 6,828 manufacturers employing 388,991 workers. The industrial publisher has recorded a 3.9% increase in the state’s manufacturing jobs since September 2012, recovering about 17% of losses suffered during the recession, and outpacing the U.S.’s overall gain of 3.3%.

Gains were largely led by the transportation equipment industry, reports MNI, which climbed 22% over the 3-year period, surpassing industrial machinery as the state’s top industry by employment. Currently, transportation equipment employs 48,654 Tennessee workers, an increase of 2% from September 2013, according to MNI data.

“Manufacturing employment in Tennessee continues to pick up speed,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “With its zero state income tax, skilled workforce, ease of logistics, and one of the friendliness business environments in the nation, major auto manufacturers have invested in the state and boosted employment.”

Other sectors posting increases over the past twelve months included chemicals, up 4.6%; primary metals, up 2.4%; electronics, up 1.7%, and industrial machinery, up 1.3%.
