Michael’s Best Gourmet Ice Cream expresses Lowes Foods’ dedication to buy local, buy fresh

PRLog - Dec. 18, 2014 - SANFORD, N.C. -- In keeping with the theme to buy fresh and local and to support small businesses, Lowes Foods’ owners embraced the passion and taste of Michael’s Best Gourmet Ice Cream, created by Michael Yarborough of Sanford. Lowes Foods is homegrown, a family-owned grocery chain in the Carolinas since 1954. The supermarkets now offer the freshest and best locally sourced products.

Last Spring Yarborough, the ice cream maker and owner of Michael’s Best Enterprises, created his own wholesale line of ice cream. He launched his first six flavors, Banana Puddin’, Butter Pecan, Caramel Nut Fudge, Chocolate Malt, French Silk, and Nutty Coconut, in about 100 Lowes Foods stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. He has personally visited about 20 stores to offer samples and spread the word about his creations.

“Visiting the Lowes stores gives me valuable feedback from our customers,” Yarborough said.  “Often there is a long line of people circling the store, waiting to sample the gourmet ice cream. I always ask them how they like it and if they have any suggestions.”

Sales at Lowes Foods have been good.  “Although we sell more in the warmer months,” Yarborough said, “it seems more and more of our fans are stocking up on their favorite flavors for Winter too. Our pint size containers filled with gourmet ice cream make great gifts and provide delicious desserts. We sincerely thank the folks who buy our ice cream during cold weather because they’re helping us meet monthly store quotas.”

In early 2014 Michael’s Best moved into a 5,400 square-foot building to house his manufacturing activities on Hwy. 421 in Sanford. Yarborough installed equipment for making, freezing, and packaging ice cream for distribution. He drew upon his persistent passion and distinct palate to combine the freshest cream from a local dairy farm, highest quality nuts and fruits, and selected natural ingredients to create unique tastes.

“Each flavor is churned in small batches to ensure excellence that will please any palate,” Yarborough said.

Yarborough grew up working around his family’s business, Yarborough’s Ice Cream and Grill in downtown Sanford. After pursuing a career in tennis he came back home in 1987 to open a school of tennis and to hone his ice cream making skills, experimenting with tastes and perfecting flavors during the past 27 years.

Yarborough followed in the footsteps of his father, Carol Michael Yarborough, Sr., and his grandfather, Phillip “Phil” Chaffin Yarborough, Sr. whose homegrown businesses have sold ice cream to generations of satisfied consumers for eight decades.
