The Florida Writer’s Association will present the 2nd Annual Write Stuff Mini-Conference on Saturday, March 21 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  Taking place at the Renaissance Ft. Lauderdale-Plantation Hotel (1230 South Pine Island Road, Plantation, FL), the conference includes a series of workshops taught by writers Vic DiGenti, Jade Kerrion, Kim Campbell, and Samantha Shad.

9:00 AM—12:00 PM, Caution! Thrills & Chills Ahead: Writing the Thriller for Fun & Profit, led by Vic DiGenti

Today’s thrillers combine high stakes, adrenaline-fueled pacing, and nonstop action. The genre has a headlock on the commercial fiction market, and its authors frequently find themselves on bestseller lists. Award-winning author Vic DiGenti (aka Parker Francis) will take you inside a thriller writer’s head to explore the best ways to create a killer thriller. This workshop will provide ample time to work on elements of the thriller novel, including characterization, plotting, and adding suspense. Come prepared to learn how you can write your own thriller—but don’t forget to breathe.

9:00 AM—12:00 PM & 1:00 PM—3:45 PM, The Female Character, led by Jade Kerrion and Kim Campbell

Some of the most memorable characters in fiction are female. Katniss. Scout. Nancy Drew. Jo March. Alphaba. Hemione. Even Charlotte from Charlotte’s Web. Combining lecture, writing exercises and other participant interaction, this full-day seminar will dive into how to write believable female characters by examining what she wants and how she achieves her goals, where she is from, why she matters to readers, how setting guides your character’s choices, and more.  Jade Kerrion and Kim Campbell, experienced writers and instructosr, will also explore how writing the female character differs from the male character and ways to make her unique and interesting so she too will be memorable.  The Female Character workshop is designed for the advanced writer as well as for the beginning writer who wants to go beyond simple plotting and character development instruction to advance his/her writing. This workshop is also suitable for fiction writers of all genres.

1:00 PM—3:45 PM, Above All, the Story, led by Samantha Shad

Story is the most important element to your reader. We open up the toolkit and explore the professional tools of the trade: neuroscience and hooks, three-act structure, bicycle wheel vs. line dancing structure, suspense, surprise, red herrings, character arcs, open vs. closed mysteries, piping, plumbing, clues, conceals, backstory, and ghost reveals.
