Provincetown, Massachusetts - February 26, 2015 - (Newswire.com)

Provincetown Banner Arts Editor Robert Phelps and arts writer Laura Shabott present “Promote Yourself: A Strategy for Artists” at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum from 10AM to 12PM Saturday, March 21st as part of the Free Members’ Workshop Program.

In the first segment, Phelps will share basic best practices for artists to engage editors in getting the word out about themselves, their art and their events. He will provide a template for the most effective and efficient press release, and a timeline for sending it out and following up on it. “Artists, being the creative souls they are,” Phelps says, “may, and probably should, take these promotional tools, rip them apart and reconstruct them in a way that better expresses the nature of their art. Still, one must be mindful of a few basic tenets to capture and hold any editor’s attention in today’s fast-paced and increasingly lesser-staffed newsroom.”

In the second segment, Provincetown’s Laura Shabott will discuss the use of websites, social media, catalogs and postcards. “Artists and writers are responsible for their own promotion, now more than ever. People who expect their gallery or agents to do the lion’s share of the work are unrealistic,” she says. “By coming to this workshop, participants will learn how to begin or expand an effective marketing practice.”

While Phelps and Shabott both work for the Provincetown Banner, this workshop is an independent project. The opinions and recommendations during the event are their own.

Sponsored by The Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Museum School, Program Administrator Grace Ryder-O-Malley says, “We pride ourselves on offering a variety of fun and educational programs to our members, of which this is included. Getting out there and promoting oneself is difficult, it’s not something that comes easily to all people, and definitely isn’t something that is inherently understood. So we believe this kind of information is valuable and important.”

Preregistration is highly suggested Call 508.487.1750 to reserve or email gryderomalley@paam.org. Whether you’re an artist or an art appreciator, PAAM Membership opens the door to programs that enrich and inspire. PAAM membership begins at $50 annually. https://www.paam.org/members/
