Drug store shelves are crowded with products that claim they can offer brighter smiles and whiter teeth, but, according to a recent New York Times article, these products may not be everything they are cracked up to be. Orange County Dental Care has offered a new statement to the press, commenting on the article and on teeth whitening trends in general.
According to The New York Times, in a feature from its “Well” blog, consumers should always consult with their dentists before using off-the-shelf teeth whitening products. The concern is not necessarily that these products will prove dangerous, but rather that they will prove ineffective.

In addition, the article notes the possibility of these consumer products having a negative effect on the tissue in the mouth. The best policy, the article states, is to have a dentist check fillings and crowns and make a recommendation for the best teeth whitening approach.
