12th Annual MIT Sloan CIO Symposium to Help CIOs Invent their Future and Accelerate Success through Technology

The MIT Sloan CIO Symposium, a world class one-day conference, will gather over 700 CIOs and senior business executives to discuss, network and explore critical business issues, technologies and leading-edge research. The 12th annual Symposium will equip attendees with actionable insight to set a successful path for their organization’s future. The Symposium will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on May 20, 2015 at the MIT Kresge Auditorium in Cambridge, MA. Registration is still open.

This year’s theme, “Inventing Your Future: Accelerating Success through Technology” will draw heavily from two books originating from the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy – the New York Times best seller, The Second Machine Age by Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee, and the new book, Leading Digital: Turning Technology into Business Transformation, authored by George Westerman, Didier Bonnet and Andrew McAfee. All of the authors (Bonnet, Brynjolfsson, McAfee and Westerman) are attending and actively participating in the day’s activities.

“Digitization and exponential improvements in technology, paired with new combinations of people, processes, and technology are the foundation to accelerated success,” said Lindsey Anderson, Chair of the 2015 MIT Sloan CIO Symposium. “We are at an inflection point where what made CIOs successful today will not necessarily make them successful tomorrow. CIOs need new modes of thinking and practice, and exceptional collaboration skills across the organization. To accelerate success, CIOs need to work with their C-Suite colleagues and the rest of their enterprise on envisioning new business models enabled by technology.”

The Symposium will feature more than a dozen interactive panel discussions with top leaders in their fields of expertise. All of the day’s sessions will help attendees learn how to effectively use technology to improve business performance while sustaining their leadership. The full agenda is available at www.mitcio.com/agenda. Highlights include:

  • MIT Academic Keynote Panel: “The Impact of Automation” will discuss digital technologies that are fundamental to the leading innovation-driven companies driving our economy. While technology is advancing rapidly, many organizations are not keeping pace and the gap in the pace of adoption will grow rapidly in the coming decades as exponential improvements in automation affect more and more of the economy. Discussion will involve the trajectory of AI, robotics and automation, and put forth a call to arms for CIOs to embrace the opportunities that they present to today’s leading businesses. Featuring Prof. Erik Brynjolfsson, MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy (IDE); Prof. Daniela Rus, MIT CSAIL; Prof. Mary (Missy) Cummings, Duke University; Prof. Tomaso Poggio, MIT Center for Biological and Computational Learning; and Robbie Allen, Automated Insights.
  • Innovation Keynote Panel: Platform Shift – How New Business Models are Changing the Shape of Industry, and the Role of CIOs” will reveal the secret of Internet-driven platforms and CIOs will tell how they have embraced platforms at their organizations. Companies that can transform their traditional business models into platforms (or network models) will have a competitive advantage based on new insights into pricing, network effects, supply chains, and strategy. These principles show how dotcom companies like Airbnb, Amazon, Apple and Uber managed, in a relatively short time, to attract millions of clients worldwide. But they apply also to traditional product companies like Sony, shoe companies like Nike, and spice companies like McCormick. New business models help these companies extend existing transactions to new, associated products and services. Featuring Prof. Marshall Van Alstyne, MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy (IDE); Bryan Kirschner, Apigee Institute; Jerry Wolfe, Vivanda; and Paddy Srinivasan, LogMeIn (NASDAQ: LOGM).
  • Afternoon Keynote Panel:Leading Digital: A Manifesto for IT and Business Executives” will show you how to be part of the strategic digital conversation. Companies in every industry are mapping their way through the digital realm, being fueled by mobility, analytics, social media, cloud computing, and embedded devices. Yet companies in various industries are far outpacing others in their ability to drive new value from digital technology. Digital Masters don’t just adopt technology, they transform their businesses through smart digital investment and strong leadership of change. Featuring George Westerman, MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy (IDE); Anthony Christie, Level 3 Communications (NYSE: LVLT); Brian Tilzer, CVS Health (NYSE: CVS); and Craig Stephenson, Korn Ferry (NYSE: KFY).

Other panel sessions driven by key IT leaders, practitioners, and MIT researchers include: “The Board, CEO and CIO Roles in Dealing with Digital Disruption,” “Cybersecurity - New Approaches to Assessing and Maximizing Your Protection,” “Healthcare Breakout: Inventing Continuity of Care,” “Getting the Data – Approaches to Managing Personal Data,” “Demand Shaping: How IT Becomes a Distinctive Advantage,” “The Internet of Things: Challenges for a Connected World,” “Cashing in on Your Data,” and “The Influence of Digital on CIO Leadership.”

The Symposium will also feature this year’s finalists for the prestigious MIT Sloan CIO Leadership Award on several panels and conclude with The Innovation Showcase, which connects CIOs and senior business leaders with ten carefully selected early-stage technology companies which have the potential to impact CIOs’ top and bottom lines through innovation value.
