Dow Commemorates Five Year Partnership with the Philadelphia Science Festival

As the Presenting Sponsor of the Philadelphia Science Festival, a nine-day community-wide celebration of science and technology, The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by leveraging the Company’s partnerships to showcase how science enables sports. Since the Festival’s 2011 inception, Dow, in coordination with The Franklin Institute and Philadelphia’s science, cultural, and educational institutions, has supported this region-wide celebration of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

“Greater Philadelphia is an innovation hub for Dow, and we are proud to once again serve as the Presenting Sponsor of the Philadelphia Science Festival,” said Jane Palmieri, business president, Dow Building and Construction and executive corporate board member, The Franklin Institute. “We believe there is no better way to get students excited about science than through hands-on learning opportunities.”

This year, Dow brings STEM to life through the science of sports, presenting “Where Science Can Take You,” a series of hands-on activities focused on four hubs of interests:

  • USA Luge, including Olympic bronze medalist Erin Hamlin, the first American (male or female) to take home a medal in the individual Olympic luge competition and her Dow-engineered sled.
  • Richard Childress Racing (RCR) No. 3 Dow Chevrolet from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
  • Sport Surfaces enabled with Dow innovations bring to life how technology impacts performance.
  • Stadium and Venues enhanced by Dow technology to create safe, sustainable environments.

As the Official Chemistry Company of the Olympic Games and partner of Richard Childress Racing, the sports industry is a key market for Dow and has tremendous opportunities for growth. Leveraging these partnerships at the Festival provides the Company the opportunity to engage and educate the workforce of tomorrow on how sports and science go hand in hand.

“Even though Philadelphia has a great history of innovation and education, not long ago the idea of mobilizing the entire community around STEM learning would have been seen as a very difficult task,” said Larry Dubinski, president and chief executive officer of The Franklin Institute. “Over the past five years, together, with the leadership of Dow, we have experienced first-hand the power the Philadelphia Science Festival has to bring the community together to experiment, incubate and inspire.”

What started as a local collaboration around STEM has grown to include 210 partner organizations in 2015 and has inspired year-round work to improve STEM education, focused on supporting and driving the interest of students, parents and educators. Through its STEMtheGAP™ initiatives, including the partnership with the Philadelphia Science Festival, Dow aims to excite young minds about STEM-related careers, transform STEM education into a driver for innovation and build the workforce of tomorrow, aligning with the Company’s 2025 Sustainability Goals.
