Innovative Spray Painting with Heated Nitrogen

Since the invention of the spray gun in the early 1920s, paint has always been sprayed with compressed air. As with any new technology at that time, there were certain challenges that needed to be addressed, namely: pressure, volume of air, filtration, temperature and compressed air quality.

Over the years and the addition of a variety of additional technologies including high performance compressors, dryers and filtration systems, the industry developed a standard for clean compressed air for spray painting of automotive, aeronautical and industrial components. With the demand of higher quality cosmetic finishes of painted products came the need for higher quality spray guns and compressed air (propellant). Nitrogen separation technologies came into play when it was found that spraying paint with a single gas improved the transfer efficiency of the spray gun and provided a higher quality finish. However, nitrogen is a naturally cold gas and this meant that the paint stayed "wet" for longer periods. The addition of a heat source was the solution to that problem and hence the term NitroHeat. This is heated nitrogen. The heat added to the nitrogen solved the challenge of drying times of liquid sprayable paint and other materials. The benefits of this application include: (a) Faster paint curing/drying time, (b) Improved paint transfer efficiency with minimized overspray, and (c) Higher quality finished products.
