Managing Pathways to Education Students from High School through to Alumni

Pathways to Education is an organization changing lives. They’re work in low-income communities has helped decrease dropout rates by as much as 70 per cent and resulted in an increase of up to 300 per cent more youth going on to college or university.

This organization is making a real difference in the lives of Canadian youth, but they were struggling to maintain contact with youth when they transitioned from high school to college or university and upon graduation when they became alumni. Pathways to Education managed all of their high school students in Dynamics CRM, their college and university students had no database, and then alumni were put in Raisers Edge. In the past, they were managing this ‘gap’ in communications (between high school and alumni) in Excel. However, with the expected growth in Pathways to Education alumni they knew it was time to move out of Excel and get a proper solution to manage both their high school students, post-secondary students and alumni.

With Pathways to Education already having Dynamics CRM and Raisers Edge in place, they saw themselves having two options. Expand Raisers Edge to manage down, or expand Dynamics CRM to manage up.

When evaluating the options they realized that expanding Raisers Edge down would be a time consuming customization job – and still limited in the functionality. Whereas, Dynamics CRM already has the capability to handle students throughout the student lifecycle, it was a matter of configuration – meaning no new coding had to be added to the solution. This made the decision for Pathways to Education an easy one, expanding their existing Dynamics CRM solution met the needs of all their stakeholders and meant less implementation time compared to Raisers Edge allowing them to start to using the solution sooner.

Pathways to Education are already in the process of expanding their Dynamics CRM solution and will be up and running – managing all of their youth in one properly configured database – in June 2015. With the complete student life-cycle in one system they eliminate the gaps in communication with their students and can build better relationships with them. By staying in touch with their students all the way from high school through post-secondary school, and as an alumni they have a better relationship with their students which will increase alumni volunteer engagement and alumni funding.
