3, 2, 1 – Go! A phrase which commonly commences a race, but in the case of Bassmaster Elite Series pro Aaron Martens, he isn’t taking his first steps, he’s already found his stride. In Martens’ instance, the “3, 2, 1” holds more meaning, as the numbers signify his final tournament placement in his best three events of the four total derbies this season. The “2 & 1” represent his most recent two tournaments and also serve to warn the field that he’s now reached his preferred pace. The race he’s in - is a familiar one, the Bassmaster Angler of the Year, which he’s won on two occasions and has challenged for nearly every season he has competed on the big stage.

While he may know the course and the competition, 2015 has been a year of big changes for Martens, both personal and professional. It was the night before the season’s biggest event, the Bassmaster Classic that Martens learned of the passing of his father. Despite the obvious mental distraction, Martens took the advice of his mother and finished the event displaying a level of professionalism and grace that was admired by all. After spending much needed time with his family, Martens returned to the Elite Series with a level of focus and determination that has not slowed at all at the half way point of the season. On the professional side, Martens made the tough choice of leaving a longtime sponsor for a new company, Enigma Fishing, that afforded him more control of the design and production of the products they produced; something Martens had long dreamed of.

Martens’ first endeavor with Enigma Fishing was designing a series of rods to his specifications. Known for his meticulous approach to fishing and more specifically fishing tackle, many consumers figured they would be well outside an average anglers’ budget, but that wasn’t to be the case. Instead, Martens went at the process with only one definitive stipulation: the rods must be reasonably priced. After months of research, developments and innumerable prototypes, Martens got the finished products which he has used throughout the season. Admittedly, he says it took him a while to completely understand each rod’s characteristics and how they could handle new techniques or lures. From the swamps of the Sabine River in Texas to the gin clear waters of Lake Havasu, AZ – the Enigma Rods Aarons Edge Series have proven worthy tools for Martens’ craft.

While Martens has already accomplished his goal of winning an event this year, the race is just beginning for him and the other anglers on the Bassmaster Elite Series. With four more regular season events left to determine the Angler of the Year, there’s still more work left for Martens to do. After sampling the sweet taste of victory and becoming more and more confident with his new rods, it appears Martens is in familiar territory, poised for another run at the Bassmaster Elite Series Angler of the Year title.
