NWA Oncology Group Breaks Ground In Targeted Breast Cancer Research

Highlands Oncology Group Is First In Western World Studying a New Therapy For Specific Cancers

Fayetteville, AR - May 22, 2015 - (Newswire.com)

Highlands Oncology Group (HOG), a northwest Arkansas based cancer treatment and research facility, is the first research site, in the Western hemisphere and Europe, to study a new targeted oral therapy for triple negative breast cancer, gastric cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The therapy targets c-myc, a well-established oncogene. An oncogene is a mutated form of a gene involved in normal cell growth which may cause the growth of cancer cells, according to the National Cancer Institute.

The investigative oral therapy has the potential to become a new treatment option for patients in the region.

“It is exciting to have another drug which may provide a new target option for our patients with triple negative breast cancer," said J. Thaddeus Beck, a leading physician and co-founder of HOG.

HOG is committed to the advancement of breast cancer treatment and will present further research on triple-negative breast cancer at the annual American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting this year in Chicago.

Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). About 12 percent of women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime, according to the ACS.

As the leading cancer treatment and research facility in Northwest Arkansas, HOG is dedicated to the advancement of cancer treatment and to providing patients with the best possible care and results.
