South African Student Dreams of US College, Starts IndieGoGo Campaign

Friends of Andrew Johns, a young South African man who has grown up in a home for children whose families are affected by AIDS, have launched an IndieGoGo campaign to help this student attend business school in the United States.

Andrew Johns is a 20-year-old student from Johannesburg, South Africa.  For the past 10 years, he has lived in Nkosi’s Haven, a home for children whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS.

According to Andrew, “I am surrounded by children who look up to me, and I am intent to show them that you shouldn’t let your current situation determine who you become in the future.  From being a young man who lives in an orphanage in South Africa, I am eager to attend a U.S. university, because being born in the ozone of apartheid’s ending, I want to spend the next four years breathing the air of equal opportunity that is the American dream which in South Africa in 2015 is not yet a reality.”

Tony Winner Dick Scanlan, Orange Is The New Black star Danielle Brooks, and 2015 Tony Winner Alex Sharp are heading up ‘Andrew’s Dream’. Andrew met Dick Scanlan and Alex Sharp through Artists Striving to End Poverty and received a generous scholarship from St. Michael’s College in Vermont. However, Andrew still needs $29,000 to be able to attend school.  These funds include money for room and board, the remainder of his tuition, travel expenses and funds for books and other supplies he will need at school. While the scholarship covers about half of his costs, Andrew will still have to raise the rest of the money in order to be able to attend.

The IndieGoGo page, located at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/andrew-s-dream-from-south-africa-to-st-michael-s#/story, offers pledge levels from $10 to $2,000 and perks ranging from a personalized thank you from Andrew to tickets to the Tony-winning play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and an autographed souvenir book from the cast.

For more information on specific prizes associated with various pledge levels, see the IndieGoGo page.
