This Patent is instrumental in the commercialization of the lead product, Karaphor Solution, and several additional, desperately needed, medical products.
KARAPHOR SOLUTION is an injectable liquid designed to replace the currently used variations and combinations of heparin and saline. Karaphor is made from naturally occurring substances which, in combination, provide effective anticoagulation within the catheter and substantial antimicrobial activity.
Extensive independent testing has confirmed commercial viability. This testing includes broad spectrum efficacy (106 kill in less than a minute, gram negative, gram positive, fungi, including resistant strains). Safety and toxicity testing, as well as biofilm testing, have produced excellent results.
KARAPHOR SOLUTION is designed and has been proven to be able to be flushed into the patient as opposed to other products that need to be withdrawn.
Saline and heparin do not provide any antimicrobial properties. Heparin is an animal derivative and has been associated with many adverse events and complications.
Catheter-related blood stream infections (CRBSI) are one of seven major healthcare challenges identified by the CDC. It is reported that up to 400,000 cases occur annually resulting in patient death with mortality rates between 12% to 25%, and costs to treat one case range from $25,000 to $55,000.
